The latest radio piece

 

It's been a few months since my Winston Churchill travels, but there's still an appetite for my reports on air. This one was on PM on BBC Radio 4 the Monday before Easter. It's about a project in Washington DC where people in the community give feedback on prose and poems written by serving prisoners. It's also about Washington DC starting to officially use the term "returning citizens" to refer to "ex-offenders".

It features the interview with Marietta Jaeger-Lane, which seems to have made a big impact. 

BBC Radio 4's leading news programme, The Today Programme, has run my interview with the remarkable woman I wrote about in a previous post. Her name is Marietta, and she's remarkable because of her capacity to forgive and channel her grief. Many years ago her little girl was abducted and murdered. Marietta not only forgave the man who did this terrible thing, but also asked the judges to overturn his death penalty.

Listen to my news report about The Prison Show in Houston, Texas, which broadcasts "Shout Outs" to prisoners, including those on Death Row.  It was broadcast on PM on BBC Radio 4.

ABOUT ME

I'm Siobhann. I'm a British broadcast journalist & radio programme maker at the BBC. I have recently been Head of Prison Radio in the UK. 

 

During my time in the post I was awarded a  Winston Churchill Memorial Trust bursary giving me the opportunity to travel to Sweden & America. 

 

I'm looking at radio programmes about prison issues, which may include the voice of offenders or ex-offenders, which can be heard on the public airwaves.

 

Do these programmes give an insight into a world most of us don't know about, or are they an editorial nightmare, too risky to manage?

 

I'm trying to find out.
