The Transistor Radio

This is my "bread and butter". This is how I earn a "crust". The good old fashioned radio. So I was naturally picked up on another fact on my visit to the Nobel Museum in Stockholm. The transistor was invented in 1948. During the '1950s it was a component put in many electronic devices, including radios, making them more compact and portable, and therefore a brilliant and cheap way to brodcast information and entertainment. Three men from Britain got the Physics Prize in 1956 for "their discovery of the transistor effect". They are Walter Brattain, John Bardeen and William Bradford Shockley (pictured below. I took the picture at the Nobel Museum exhibit relating to them).
